As Arte Moreno resists a fire sale, a blockbuster proposal sends Reid Detmers to Atlanta for a pair of elite young talents to jumpstart Anaheim’s rebuilding efforts.
The Los Angeles Angels are one of just five teams to be at least six games out of a spot in the postseason, which would be the 12th consecutive season in which they don’t make it beyond the 162-game regular season. With another year without the playoffs almost certain, the Angels' direction at this year’s trade deadline should be clear.
The obvious strategic approach would be to cash in on some of your top assets that have their value at an all-time high in order to set yourself up for a solid foundation to build upon a few years down the line. The Angels, however, are a franchise like no other in the world of sports.
Owner Arte Moreno has already opposed trading away key assets like starting pitchers Reid Detmers and Jose Soriano, along with outfielder Jo Adell. Despite a 36-52 record, Moreno is looking to stand pat and finish the year with the same roster and with no change to help the club’s future.
Understandably, Moreno’s position has frustrated Angels fans, who already have more than enough reasons to hold resentment towards the billionaire. Still, the deadline will not pass for another month, which means there’s still time to have hope, right?
In a new article from Bleacher Report, writer Kerry Miller included an Angels trade in a list of 10 fresh trades as we approach the deadline. The deal would send Detmers to the Atlanta Braves in exchange for right-handed pitcher Owne Murphy and infielder Jose Perdomo.
Detmers has been enjoying a career year in his return to the starting rotation, posting a 3.88 ERA and 1.6 WAR in 17 starts this season for the Halos. The southpaw is only about to turn 27 years old and won’t be a free agent until after the 2028 season.
That type of production could land the Angels some serious young talent in return, and a deal for Murphy and Perdomo would make some sense.
Murphy, a former first-round selection in 2022, has made 16 starts across Double-A and Triple-A in the Braves’ system this season. In those games, he’s posted a 4.44 ERA and 1.26 WHIP. His walks per nine innings numbers have seen a jump, going from 1.8 in 2025 to 4.2 this year, but Murphy remains the No. 6 prospect in Atlanta’s system according to MLB.com.
Perdomo signed with the Braves as a 17-year-old in January of 2024 and has played in 64 games for the organization since. Ranked as the No. 3 international prospect of that year, Perdomo was compared to a young Miguel Cabrera by one Latin American scout.
He hasn’t had enough game time yet to get a full grasp on what he could do in the coming years, but Perdomo could end up being a real impact starter in the major leagues a few years down the line. The Angels are in a position where they need to take risks on such players, given their lackluster farm system.
While the Angels’ owner may not be looking for deals at this year’s deadline, that certainly won’t stop teams from inquiring about the talents stuck in Anaheim. Let’s hope for a last-minute change of heart from Moreno.
