Unexpected ace Jose Soriano and third baseman Oswald Peraza headline the Angels' surprising early-season success, earning spots on baseball's 'All-Surprise Team.'
The Los Angeles Angels haven’t been absent from headlines a month into the 2026 season. Driven by a surprisingly competitive squad and star players, the Halos have been one of the more entertaining teams in all of baseball.
As an Angels fan, you can’t complain. It’s been over a decade since postseason baseball has been played in Anaheim, so anytime there is at least somewhat competitive baseball being played, it’s a good time for Halos fans, despite owner Arte Moreno previously claiming wins aren’t a priority for the fans.
With all that said, there are reasons as to why there has been more excitement coming out of Anaheim this season. Superstar Mike Trout has flashed his MVP form on multiple occasions, while others have stepped up despite no expectations at all.
There are two Angels that have made their way onto Bleacher Report’s ‘All-Surprise Team’ after the first month of action, and even one former Angel who has made a name for themself in another uniform.
Right-handed pitcher Jose Soriano is the obvious pick here after his historic start to the year. Through six starts and 37 ⅔ innings, the 27-year-old has allowed just a single run to score, leaving him with an inconceivable 0.24 ERA and 1826 ERA+.
With those numbers, it’s no wonder that Soriano has emerged as the unexpected Cy Young favorite in the American League despite having a rather average 2025 season. The Angels’ new ace is the easiest All-Surprise team pick you could think of.
Third baseman Oswald Peraza may be a more under-the-radar selection, however. Joining the Halos last season, Peraza contributed negative WAR in his 35 games after posting a slash line of .186/.245/.267 with a 44 OPS+. It was safe to say he wasn't expected to contribute much in 2026, especially after the club re-signed Yoan Moncada in the offseason.
Peraza has earned his spot on BR’s team, however, as he’s in the midst of his best major league season to date. Splitting time at second and more recently third, Peraza has an .889 OPS heading into Friday night’s contest, making him one of the most impactful bats in the lineup. Without his play, the Angels’ record wouldn't be as close to .500 as it currently is.
A former Halos top prospect also made the All-Surprise team after a strong start to the 2026 campaign. After seeing an increased role due to second baseman Jackson Holliday’s injury, Jeremiah Jackson has been balling out for the Baltimore Orioles.
In 78 at-bats, Jackson has smashed five home runs, driven in 19 runs, and recorded a 130 OPS+. His future will be a little unclear when Holliday returns, but he’s certainly done his best to earn an everyday spot in the Orioles lineup. For Angels fans, it’s a tough pill to swallow.
