Taking a look at the Houston Astros injury report as they look to go up 2-0 in the series against the Seattle Mariners.
The Houston Astros are coming off a solid team win as they defeated their division rival Seattle Mariners 10-7 in the 10th inning on Friday night.
Heading into Saturday's game, the Astros will be looking to go up 2-0 on the Mariners, which would put Seattle in a position where it would be very difficult to compete for an AL West title as it gets closer and closer to the postseason.
Before the Astros and the Mariners do match up tonight, it is important to take a look at any injury updates on Houston's side of things. So, here is the injury report heading into the second game of the series between the Astros and the Mariners.
At this point, the Astros have four players to monitor when it comes to the injury report which includes right-handed pitcher Mike Burrows, outfielder Brice Matthews, shortstop Carlos Correa, and left-handed pitcher Brandon Walter.
Starting with Burrows, he is still in his rehab process, healing from his right elbow neuritis that placed him on the 15-day IL on July 13th and is retroactive to July 7th. Currently, Burrows' return is still to be determined, but he has been progressing very well.
The latest step in the recovery for Burrows was a rehab start on August 14th for Triple-A Sugar Land, where he threw 4 1/3 scoreless innings and allowed three hits, one walk, and was able to strikeout three batters. The rehab start for Burrows yesterday was definitely a step in the right direction, which could indicate he is somewhat close to a return to the Majors.
The next injury update comes for Matthews, who is still battling a left knee sprain that put him on the 10-day IL on July 17th. Currently, Matthews has an expected return of the third week in August, which is coming up next week, which may mean he is able to return in the coming days.
In terms of where Matthews stands right now, he has been putting in some good work as he has been able to do some hitting, field ground balls, and some running. The next part of this process is getting Matthews on the bases to see how his knee reacts. The latest update for Matthews was on August 8th, so whenever the next update does come, that may mean he is very close to returning to action.
The third player to talk about on this injury report is Correa, who is still in his recovery process from the peroneus brevis tendon repair surgery he had done on his left ankle. This injury placed Correa on the IL on May 6th, and then on June 2nd he was moved to the 60-day IL. Based on Correa's progression so far, he does have the possibility of returning in 2026, but there is not a set date just yet.
As far as Correa's status goes, the latest update given by manager Joe Espada came on August 8th when he stated that Correa has been taking dry swings and will begin tee work soon. When the next update does come, that should give a much better indication as to what Correa's time table actually is.
The last injury listed on the injury report is Walter, who is still recovering from the Tommy John surgery he had on September 23rd, 2025, to repair his torn ulnar collateral ligament on his left elbow.
As a result of the Tommy John surgery, Walter is slated to miss the rest of the 2026 but is expected to be back to start the 2027 season. As Walter continues to heal, if he can progress well, he may have an opportunity to be key contributor for the Astros as a pitcher next season.
Heading into the Astros matchup with the Mariners tonight, none of these injuries will have a direct impact on this game, but it will be interesting to monitor the status of Burrows, Matthews, and Correa as the postseason gets closer, as well as how Walter looks heading into 2027.
