Taking a look at the latest injury updates for the Houston Astros ahead of their series finale against the Chicago White Sox.
The Houston Astros were able to take command of the series against the Chicago White Sox on Thursday as Houston came out on top with a 2-0 victory.
Heading into today's game, the Astros will be looking to take the series 3-1, but they will need a good effort and another strong performance from the mound.
Before the Astros and White Sox match up in the series finale it is worth looking at the injury report for Houston to see if there are any injuries that could impact this game.
So, here is a breakdown of the Astros' injury report heading into their series finale against the White Sox.
On the injury report, there are four players to monitor: right-handed pitcher Mike Burrows, outfielder Brice Matthews, shortstop Carlos Correa, and left-handed pitcher Brandon Walter.
Starting with Burrows, he has been working through right elbow neuritis and is now also working through right shoulder inflammation, based on the update that came on September 2nd. Initially, Burrows was placed on the 15-day IL on July 13th, which is retroactive to July 7th, in response to his right elbow neuritis.
In terms of Burrows' right shoulder inflammation, he experienced it following his latest rehab start with Triple-A Sugar Land, which is a setback, so his return is still to be determined. However, it is important to note that Burrows does hope to pitch at some point this season, which would be great for this Houston pitching staff that has had some struggles.
Now shifting the focus to Matthews, he has been recovering from a left knee sprain which placed him on the IL on July 17th and then on August 19th he was moved to the 60-day IL. Matthews return is also still to be determined which is definitely a setback since at point he was expected back in the third week of August.
In terms of Matthews' recovery, on September 2nd it was revealed that he began the month of August working out in West Palm Beach, Florida, to help his knee continue to progress. Additionally, Matthews should be playing in rehab games at Triple-A in the first weekend of September, so it will be interesting to see how he looks in those appearances.
The third player to talk about is Correa who is working through the surgery he had done to repair his torn peroneus brevis tendon in his left ankle. Correa was injured on May 5th and had surgery on May 11th which caused him to be placed on the IL on May 6th and then he was moved to the 60-day IL on June 2nd.
In terms of Correa's timetable, there is a possibility that he could return this season. For Correa's rehab, it was announced on September 2nd that he is ramping up his workouts and running at 95 percent. Correa is also fielding grounders at third and is hitting off a pitching machine which does seem like a great sign and could help him to be ready for the postseason.
The final player on this injury report, is Walter who is still recovering the Tommy John surgery he had done on September 23rd, 2025 to repair his torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow. As a result of the injury, Walter was placed on the 60-day IL on March 25 and will miss the rest of this season, but he should be ready to provide depth in the Houston bullpen in 2027.
As the playoffs get closer, it will be interesting to monitor the status of Burrows, Matthews, and Correa to see if they can all return to contribute for the Astros in the postseason and what kind of impact Walter can make when he does return for the 2027 season.
