The Astros fell to the Angels 3-2 in 10 innings on Wednesday and dropped a series that was winnable. A tough loss for a team that fought back from a 2-0 deficit.
How It Started
Reid Detmers retired his first 15 batters, which posed a real challenge for the Astros right out of the gate. Mike Trout homered off Lambert in the first, making it his 15th of the season. Logan O'Hoppe added a solo homer in the fifth to make it 2-0, only his third homer of the season. Lambert, who has come in clutch but also struggled with consistency, gave up two homers, and the Angels were having a solid night on the mound. That alone gave the Angels control early.
The Astros Didn't Go Down Without a Fight
Shay Whitcomb homered leading off the sixth, his third career homer and second of the season, to get the Astros on the board and avoid the shutout. Lambert was trying to complete 7 innings for the third time this season, which would have matched his career high. Despite giving up two homers, Lambert pitched a solid game against the Angels and was on track to complete seven innings. Unfortunately he was hit on his pitching hand in the bottom of the seventh and had to leave the game with a possible injury.
De Los Santos came in and got a line drive double play. Walker caught it and they got Peraza off third, who earlier had stolen second and third. Putting a stop to that was huge for the Astros. Then Cam Smith tied it with a homer in the eighth, his seventh of the season.
The Ninth
Alvarez singled with two outs in the ninth, and Walker followed with a double. Alvarez was held at third but the Angels made a mistake and he was waved home. After a replay review the call was overturned and Alvarez was tagged out at the plate, ending the inning tied 2-2 and forcing extras.
The 10th Inning
Donovan Walton hit a leadoff single moving automatic runner Nick Madrigal to third. Jose Siri hit a walk-off single to left to score Madrigal and win the game.
Astros drop the series to the Angels and fall to 31-39. A tough pill to swallow given how close they came in the ninth. Now they head to Kansas City for a three-game series. The Astros showed fight in this one but couldn't quite get there. Kansas City is next and the Astros need to bounce back.
