The Houston Astros got a new GM, Randy Flores, and he is already making moves. He made his first trade earlier this week. The Houston Astros acquired RHP Evan Reifert, 27, from the Tampa Bay Rays on November 2 in exchange for cash considerations.
Houston also added Reifert to the 40-man roster.
Flores is already making changes to Houston’s pitching depth ahead of 2027, and he is tackling one of his top priorities: strengthening the struggling pitching staff.
Who is Evan Reifert?
Reifert is a 6-foot-4, 190-pound right-handed pitcher from Wilton, Iowa. He was drafted by the Rangers in the 30th round in 2018 but did not sign.
He attended North Iowa Area Community College and Central Missouri, and he has played in the Brewers and Rays organizations. He pitched for Double-A Montgomery in 2024 and spent 2025 and 2026 at Triple-A Durham.
He has plenty of minor-league experience but has yet to make his major-league debut.
Now, taking a look at his numbers with Triple-A Durham, he has a high strikeout rate but also a pretty high number of walks.
He had 46 appearances, including three starts, a 6–2 record, a 2.48 ERA, 58 innings pitched, 81 strikeouts, 34 walks, 37 hits allowed, a .180 opponent batting average, and a 1.22 WHIP.
His 81 strikeouts in 58 innings translated to approximately 12.6 strikeouts per nine innings, an impressive rate. Opposing hitters batted just .180 against him. That said, his 34 walks suggest control could be an issue. The strikeout ability is there, but he needs to limit walks.
So why would Flores make this one of his first moves?
Well, Houston desperately needs pitching depth heading into 2027, and 2026 was a perfect example of just how much. Reifert has primarily worked as a reliever, and with the way the bullpen was worked in 2026, adding depth to the bullpen is not a bad idea. His strikeout ability could make him a bullpen candidate. His minor-league career ERA is 2.91 with 377 strikeouts in 234.2 innings.
Now, he is on the 40-man roster, but he is not guaranteed a spot on the 26-man active roster. Houston is really just taking a chance on this minor-league pitcher.
Houston also added RHP Roddery Muñoz and catcher César Salazar to the 40-man roster. Outfielder Jake Meyers was outrighted off the roster and elected free agency.
Reifert is not a major acquisition, but he adds another pitching option. Flores is beginning to reshape the Astros’ roster, and Reifert will have an opportunity to prove himself heading into 2027.
