The Astros completed a three-game sweep of the Los Angeles Angels Wednesday night, winning 7-4. Hayden Wesneski made his first start since undergoing Tommy John surgery in May 2025, his first start in 449 days.
The Angels came out swinging to avoid the sweep. Vaughn Grissom's two-run double and Jo Adell's RBI single gave Los Angeles a 3-0 lead in the first inning, and it looked like they were on their way to snapping a losing streak.
Houston answered right back. Catcher Yainer Diaz crushed a homer in the second inning to get the Astros on the board, and Jeremy Peña launched one of his own in the third on a beautiful swing.
Peña's homer in the third inning locked in his 11th straight game with a hit, per CBS Sports. That stretch alone has him going 19-for-46, a .413 average, with six home runs, which means half of his 12 homers this season have come during this one hot streak. That is a wild stat on its own. Overall this year, the shortstop is batting .311 with an .866 OPS, 31 RBI, 50 runs scored, and eight stolen bases, per MLB. Peña has quietly turned into one of the most important pieces of this Astros lineup.
Angels starter Grayson Rodriguez made it tough on Houston, racking up six strikeouts, but he was done after five innings, and that's when the Astros turned up the heat.
In the sixth, Cam Smith lined a two-run double into the left-field corner to put Houston ahead 4-3. Smith then came around to score on back-to-back wild pitches from Angels reliever Mitch Farris, pushing the lead to 5-3.
Wesneski worked 5 2/3 innings in his first start back, allowing three runs, and left the game with the lead in hand, a strong return after such a long layoff.
In the seventh, Jose Altuve singled and scored all the way from first on a Yainer Diaz bloop single to right field, extending Houston's lead to 6-3.
Bryan Abreu came on to finish it off, closing out his seventh save of the season as the Astros held on for the 7-4 win.
With the sweep, Houston improved to 55-55, reaching .500 for the first time since April 7, and pulled within a game of first-place Texas in the AL West.
