The Houston Astros faced the Tampa Bay Rays Friday night in Tampa. A challenging matchup for the Astros, and they weren't able to secure a win for the series opener.
Miguel Ullola took the mound for Houston, once their top pitching prospect and now starting on the major league mound. He has a solid first inning, a great sign for the young pitcher. He gave them one scoreless inning before Bryan King came in for the second, followed by Ethan Pecko who came in around the third and continued to keep the game scoreless.
Isaac Paredes kept his on-base streak going when he hit a double in the fourth, and Varsho followed up with a base hit, but Paredes had to slow down at third to make sure the ball dropped. Then Yainer Diaz came up and grounded into a fielder's choice to put the Astros on the board, 1-0 Astros in the fourth. A solid way to get things going, especially since they were missing a little power at the plate.
Yordan Alvarez missed one of the only games he's sat out all season, dealing with a little ankle issue. Joe Espada did reportedly mention he wasn't overly concerned about the situation and Alvarez could potentially be able to come off the bench if needed.
The Rays tied things up in the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run by Mesa Jr. He absolutely crushed it, and everyone knew it. That is the fifth home run Pecko has given up since making his debut August 19th. Overall, a solid performance for Pecko: 5 ⅔ innings with just one run.
Bryan Abreu stepped in to a tied 1-1 game, but Jonathan Aranda crushed one, nearly a homer, but a double off the right-field wall that put him in scoring position, and he was replaced by pinch-runner Jonny DeLuca. Either way, Abreu gave up a home run to Caminero, a two-run shot that ended the game as a walk-off, sending the Rays to a 3-1 win. Caminero is not a guy you want to pitch to, but for some reason they pitched to him anyway, and gave him his 40th home run on the season. Not a way the Astros wanted to start such a challenging series, and the Rays have secured a playoff spot for October, the first major league team to do so in 2026. An exciting game full of milestones, just not for the Astros.
