The Houston Astros faced the Diamondbacks for their third and final game of the three-game series Sunday. The Astros took the series opener 3-1, but then the Diamondbacks evened things out Saturday, winning 4-3. On Sunday, the Astros found themselves fighting for their fourth straight series win, but were unable to get the job done, falling to the Diamondbacks 3-2.
Here is a look at what went down:
Peter Lambert took the mound for the Astros and had a great outing as he continues to be one of, if not the most, reliable arms in the Astros' rotation. Lambert went seven innings, allowing seven hits, three runs, zero walks, and six strikeouts. He gave them length, which has been and remains crucial due to their thin pitching staff. It was actually a career high for Lambert in innings pitched between the majors and Triple-A combined, and after a rocky start, he retired 12 straight batters to close out his outing. He gave up three runs, but overall a solid outing for Lambert.
As for the rest of the game:
Yordan Alvarez got things going for the Astros early on, doing what he does best: crushing home runs, his 38th on the season. A career high for the slugger. Alvarez is still chasing the Triple Crown, and the race remains tight. He's leading the AL in batting average and tied for the RBI lead, but as of Sunday, he's tied, not leading, in home runs after Tampa Bay's Junior Caminero also sits at 38.
Now, with the Astros leading 1-0, Corbin Carroll led off the second with a double off Lambert. Two batters later, James McCann added a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Carroll and tying the game 1-1.
Geraldo Perdomo was hit in the helmet by a line drive off the bat of his own teammate, Ketel Marte, during the third inning. He is reportedly being evaluated for a head contusion and was ruled out for at least the next game.
Nolan Arenado came up with a two-run home run, his 22nd of the season, and the Diamondbacks took the lead 3-1.
The Astros showed a little life at the plate in the eighth. Altuve capped a three-hit game with a double. Walker followed with a base hit, then LaMonte Wade Jr. added one of his own, bringing Altuve home, but it wasn't enough to secure the win. Final score: 3-2 Diamondbacks.
