Houston’s versatile infielder Shay Whitcomb is drawing attention as he showcases his power and potential while representing Team Korea in the World Baseball Classic.

Team Korea is only one game in, and Whitcomb is already making a statement. Yesterday, he hit two home runs in an 11-4 win over Czechia at the Tokyo Dome. The first was a solo shot in the third inning with an exit velocity of 106.4 mph. The second was a two-run homer in the fifth inning, extending Korea’s lead to 8-1. Both homers traveled over 360 feet, second only to the 451-foot blast he hit at Coors Field.

The 27-year-old’s performance highlights his raw power, which hasn’t fully translated to the major leagues. The WBC provides a stage for players like him to grow and gain confidence against top-level competition.

Major League Background, per  MLB:

Whitcomb’s major league experience is limited. Over the last two seasons, he has had 79 plate appearances.

2025 MLB: AB:32, HR:1, RBI:1, AVG:.125, SLG:.219

MLB Career: AB:73, HR:1, RBI:6, AVG:.178, SLG:.260

While his MLB sample is small, Whitcomb’s minor league track record shows the power that has made him a standout prospect.

Minor League Background, per MiLB:

Drafted by Houston in the 5th round of the 2020 MLB Draft, Whitcomb developed a reputation as a power hitter in the minors. Over the last two Triple-A seasons, he has hit 50 home runs, contributing to 127 career minor league homers.

2025 MiLB: AB:405, HR:25, RBI:64, AVG:.267, OPS:.869

MiLB Career: AB:2213, HR:127, RBI:395, AVG:.260, OPS:.818

Team Korea Eligibility: Whitcomb was born in Thousand Oaks, California, but through his maternal heritage, he is eligible to represent Korea. This WBC marks the first time in his career he has played internationally.

International tournaments allow players to relax without MLB pressures, giving them a chance to improve timing and confidence. Whitcomb entered the WBC after a slow spring training, hitting .143 in Grapefruit League play. His performance against Czechia shows that his power can translate to the biggest stage.

If Whitcomb can carry this power and confidence through the rest of the WBC and into MLB, he could become a key depth option for the Astros. His versatility and power make him a player who can impact off the bench or potentially carve out a larger role in the future.
