Astros Injury Update cover image

Last season, the Astros were hit hard by injuries. Key players like Yordan Alvarez missed significant time, and he even dealt with multiple injuries, limiting his impact on the field. Staying healthy will be crucial for Houston in 2026 if they want to remain competitive and avoid a repeat of the early-season struggles that derailed their 2025 campaign. Here’s a look at the team’s injury list as of January 2, 2026, per MLB:

LHP Brandon Walter – Torn ulnar collateral ligament in left elbow; expected return 2027; underwent Tommy John surgery on Sept. 23, 2025. Walter made his MLB debut in 2022 and threw a no-hitter against the Toronto Blue Jays in 2024. He is known for his strikeout ability and high ceiling as a left-handed starter.

RHP Ronel Blanco – Torn ulnar collateral ligament in right elbow; expected return 2026; underwent UCL repair with internal brace and flexor tendon repair on June 6, 2025. Blanco is a hard-throwing right-hander with potential to contribute as a starter or bullpen arm.

RHP Hayden Wesneski – Torn ulnar collateral ligament in right elbow; expected return 2026; underwent Tommy John surgery on May 23, 2025. Wesneski has MLB experience and is known for his slider and strikeout upside.

Since 2025, this list has gotten smaller and smaller. Unfortunately, Brandon Walter will be out for all of 2026 but will return in 2027. As for Ronel Blanco and Hayden Wesneski, both right-handed pitchers are expected to return. More right-handed pitchers, but still no lefty on the roster.
