After a strong 2026 season, Peña enters his final year of team control with questions about his future in Houston.

Despite dealing with an injury early on, Jeremy Peña put together a pretty stellar season. Peña did not disappoint leading off the lineup. He was, however, put in a unique position: leading off with the best hitter in baseball this season, almost always up next. With an aggressive player like Peña and a slugger like Alvarez who often gets intentionally walked or pitched around, what is an aggressive player like Peña supposed to do?

In a postgame interview, he answered those questions. Here is a look at Peña's thoughts and what he was able to accomplish for his team this season.

Peña had a strong year at the plate and found success in the leadoff spot. Peña is a great player, but he also has no problem giving credit where credit is due. He credited Alvarez with carrying the offense and being one of the reasons Houston reached the postseason. Through the ups and downs of the season, Alvarez really did help carry this team, and that is one of the things that sets him apart. Despite Peña's own success, he was quick to talk about just how special a player Yordan Alvarez really is.

Alvarez did help carry this team to the postseason, but so did Jeremy Jalapeña. Here is a look at Peña's 2026 regular season and postseason stats:

Like all players, Peña had his cold streaks, but when he was hot, he was red hot. While the postseason was short-lived this year, Peña still performed well and did what he could.

In the leadoff spot in front of a player like Alvarez, you have to make decisions. An aggressive player like Peña, once on base, has to decide just how aggressive to be. Steal a base or make sure Alvarez has a runner on?

Because with a player like Alvarez, as Peña mentions, a runner on first is basically in scoring position with a hitter like Alvarez at the plate. That being said, Peña has the green light to be aggressive, but sometimes he has to make the right choice depending on the situation. Just another reason why Peña is such a valuable player.

While Peña is a valuable piece of the puzzle, he is entering his final year under team control before potentially reaching free agency after 2027. That poses the question: Will Peña be a lifetime Astros player, or will we see him move on?

He is coming off a great season and remains one to watch, but the lineup is going to be shaken up next season as well with Carlos Correa's return from his ankle injury. How will that affect the top of the order?

Peña saw success in the leadoff spot this season, so it would be a surprise for the lineup to be completely shifted with Correa back in it. Peña has established himself as an important piece, and it will be interesting to see what he brings to the team in 2027.
