Billy Wagner, an Astros legend, has earned another well-deserved honor with his induction into the Houston Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2026.

Between his retired number and National Baseball Hall of Fame induction, Billy Wagner experienced some of the biggest milestones of his career within just a few months of each other. His achievements during this period remind fans of both his lasting impact and the high standard he set on the mound.

Wagner was officially inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame on July 27, 2025, in Cooperstown, New York, cementing his legacy as one of the all-time greats.

Then, less than a month later, on August 16, 2025, the team officially retired his jersey number 13. At the time, it was the first Astros number to be retired since Craig Biggio’s number 7 on August 17, 2008.

That moment carries even more meaning as Wagner continues to be recognized among Houston’s all-time greats, now including his upcoming induction into the Houston Sports Hall of Fame.

The ceremony in Houston brought together teammates, fans, friends, and family to celebrate a career defined by dominance and impact. Wagner was not just a closer. He was a presence. He attended Ferrum College in Ferrum, Virginia, where he played college baseball. In 1993, he was drafted by the Houston Astros in the first round, 12th overall. Just two years later, he made his major league debut on August 23, 1995.

Known for his triple-digit fastball and intimidating presence on the mound, Wagner quickly became a dominant closer. By the late 1990s, he was leading all relievers in strikeouts and instilled fear in opposing batters early in his career.

His numbers tell the same story: a 2.31 ERA, 422 saves, 1,196 strikeouts, and a WHIP of 1.00 across 903 innings. A seven-time All-Star from 1999 to 2006, Wagner earned respect across the league with his intensity, work ethic, and leadership.

Billy Wagner has collected the highest honors a baseball player can achieve, and he has undoubtedly earned every one of these coveted milestones. Few players reach even one of them, let alone all three.

Wagner’s outstanding career has been recognized across the entire organization, and rightfully so. As the Astros approach the 2026 season, Billy Wagner remains a model of excellence and someone the team can continue to look up to.
