Nick Allen is moving confidently as spring training continues. He is showing what he is capable of down in West Palm Beach and seems ready for anything. The elite defender is sharp and proving his place. Most commonly a shortstop, Allen is a versatile player prepared to step on the field at a moment’s notice. He can play shortstop, second base, and third base, giving the Astros options in late innings or during injuries.

Allen’s quick reactions, clean footwork, and strong throws across the diamond make an immediate impression. Working alongside Houston’s experienced infielders has helped him adjust quickly.

Allen was acquired through a trade that sent fan favorite Mauricio Dubón to the Braves and brought Allen to the Astros. Allen maintains the defensive flexibility the Astros had with Dubón but comes at a lower salary.

Allen, 27, debuted with the Oakland A’s on April 19, 2022, after being drafted in the third round in 2017 out of Francis Parker High School in San Diego. He has mostly played shortstop and second base during his time with the A’s from 2022 to 2024 and the Braves in 2025. His bat is not his strongest tool. He hit .221/.284/.251 in 135 games last year, but his defense sets him apart. In 2025, Allen was a Gold Glove finalist and ranked fourth in the National League in Outs Above Average according to MLB:

Allen provides immediate stability in the middle of the infield and a defensive presence the Astros can trust in high-pressure situations. His glove and strong arm can save runs, end innings, and be a key piece in keeping Houston competitive in the American League for years to come. Spring training is his proving ground, and so far Allen is showing he is ready.

Again, his bat is not where he stands out; defense is where he really shines. Here is a look at his 2025 stats and career stats, per MLB:

2025 Regular Season: AB 371, R 32, H 82, HR 0, RBI 22, SB 8, AVG .221, OBP .284, OPS .535 Career Regular Season: AB 1070, R 98, H 228, HR 9, RBI 65, SB 16, AVG .213, OBP .265, OPS .537

While Allen may not “knock it out of the park” when he steps up to the plate, he is an elite defender. He is consistent, crisp, solid, and versatile. Everything you need in an infielder, and Allen is showcasing those skills down in West Palm Beach.
