Astros Spring Training Standouts: 3 Young Players to Watch cover image

Spring Training is underway, and the Astros are still building momentum. Here are three young players making waves early in camp.

Brice Matthews: Shortstop

Matthews, 23 years old, has been making moves. He delivered in the season opener against the Nationals, making a spectacular diving catch to rob Abimelec Ortiz of a potential run. The play showed off his athleticism and defensive instincts and reminded fans why he is one of Houston’s top young players. He’s working hard and polishing his game this Spring Training.

Xavier Neyens – Shortstop/Power Hitter

Even in early Spring Training, Neyens is turning heads with the quality of his contact and the power in his swing. Xavier Neyens was recently named the Astros' best power-hitting prospect at just 19 years old. He was the 21st overall in the first round of the 2025 MLB Draft and is the No. 2 prospect in 2025. He still has some work to do timing his bat just right, but at only 19, he is already turning heads.

Walker Janek: Catcher

Walker Janek, 23 years old, has emerged as a prospect to watch in the Astros system heading into 2026. In the 2024 MLB Draft, he was selected in the first round, 28th overall. Janek has stayed healthy throughout his pro career, with no major injuries slowing his climb. Janek was selected as a non-roster invitee to Spring Training. He has appeared in four games and is 3-for-6 with a double, two RBIs, three walks, and four stolen bases so far. Starting 2026 strong would be a big boost for Janek and is something to watch as the season gets going.
