Today, the Astros are running a split-squad game, with one group taking on the Mets while the other squad faces a different opponent. This approach allows the team to give more players in-game experience and test lineup depth during spring training.
The main focus today was the Astros vs. Mets matchup. Tatsuya Imai made his Spring Training debut, and stars like Jeremy Peña, Carlos Correa, and Christian Walker were on the field. However, they did not appear to carry their momentum from yesterday’s win over the Marlins into the matchup against the Mets.
Despite the tough loss, Tatsuya Imai delivered what was expected of him. He started the game, pitched one inning, gave up one hit, and allowed zero runs.
After Imai’s scoreless first inning, Houston struggled offensively. Steven Okert took the mound in the second and gave up a three-run home run to Tyrone Taylor, giving the Mets an early 3‑0 lead. From there, the Mets continued to add runs. While neither team was perfect, the Astros struggled to generate big offensive moments, and the Mets’ timely hitting made a comeback difficult. Houston really needed a three-run homer of their own to keep pace.
Meanwhile, in the Astros’ split-squad game against the Cardinals, Houston held the lead through the first five innings, but the game slipped away, with a final score of 4‑9. The Mets game ended 5‑0 in New York’s favor, but the Astros still gained valuable playing time and experience for the roster. The team will have another chance to face the Mets on Sunday, March 1st.
