Tatsuya Imai made his Major League debut with the Houston Astros against the Los Angeles Angels in the final game of the series, and he started the game strong.

On his eighth pitch in the first inning, Angels batter Mike Trout challenged the umpire’s strikeout call, which would determine whether or not Imai had just recorded the first strikeout of his Major League career.

After review, it was in fact a strike, and just eight pitches into his Major League career, Imai recorded his first strikeout against the Angels. He also struck out Jorge Soler in the first inning, then ended the second inning with back-to-back strikeouts of Josh Lowe and Travis d'Arnaud.

When the third inning came around, things got a little rocky. A bases-loaded double by Soler cleared the bases, and an RBI single by Jo Adell tied the game.

It looked like his nerves may have gotten the best of him. He reportedly expressed just how different the environment in the Major Leagues is compared to Japan, and that difference led to some mistakes.

Taking a look at his performance as a whole, Imai made his Major League debut for the Astros in a 9–7 win over the Angels on March 29, 2026. He pitched 2 2/3 innings before being pulled, allowing four earned runs on three hits while walking four and striking out four batters. Imai threw 74 pitches, 36 of them for strikes, and despite a strong start, he gave up a four-run lead during his outing.

The Astros signed Imai early in the year after he generated buzz from his standout career in Japan. With his stellar stats and growing skill, he became an attractive target for Houston. The Astros needed a strong starting pitcher, and it appears they found exactly what they were looking for in Imai.

He is determined and motivated, and has made it clear he does not want to take the easy way out. He wants to grind and earn his place in the Major League system.

Not only is he extremely talented, but he also brings energy and confidence as he looks to chase big wins. With Imai joining the rotation, the Astros have added an impact starter who should strengthen the 2026 rotation.

There is something to be said about starting your first Major League game in a strong way. His nerves may have gotten in the way, but it is just one game, and he understandably needs to adjust to the pressures and differences of the Major Leagues.
