Brice Matthews, one of Houston’s top prospects and a Houston native, recently had his number retired by his alma mater. A graduate of Atascocita High School in 2020, Matthews saw his No. 3 baseball jersey officially retired on January 30 in Humble, Texas.

He was honored during a pep rally celebrating his achievements, becoming the first baseball player in school history to have his jersey retired.

Since graduating, Matthews has continued to make his mark on the game. He worked his way through the minor leagues entirely within the Astros organization and made his major league debut on July 11, 2025. The 23-year-old shortstop was selected by Houston in the first round of the 2023 MLB Draft and has already shown why the organization views him as a valuable long-term piece.

An elite athlete with speed, Matthews is primarily a shortstop but has also logged time at second base and third base. While his arm and swing are still developing, his versatility adds meaningful value, especially for an injury-prone roster.

Born and raised in Houston, Matthews grew up an Astros fan and has since completed a full-circle journey from fan to player. Recognized by his high school, the Astros organization, and across the state of Texas, the former top prospect is projected to become a regular contributor at the major league level. With spring training approaching, Matthews will soon be back on the field, continuing the next chapter of his rise.
