The Houston Astros pitching staff struggled in 2026, and Bryan Abreu was a big part of those ups and downs. While the reliever's performance trended downward at the start of the season, Abreu saw a real turnaround during the summer months. When he stepped into the closer role with Josh Hader sidelined with biceps tendinitis, Abreu wasn't at his best. However, with Hader's return, Abreu improved.

Abreu may have struggled, but he's been a key factor for years; with free agency approaching, his future is uncertain. Is his time with Houston coming to an end, or will the Astros hold onto their longtime reliever?

It has been suggested that the Astros might let Abreu leave this winter. What would that mean for the bullpen?

Based on his stats, what's the right move for this team?

Abreu's 2026 regular-season stats:

6–4 W–L, 3.73 ERA, 66 G, 9 SV, 62.2 IP, 80 SO, 1.36 WHIP

Abreu's career regular-season stats:

22–16 W–L, 2.82 ERA, 383 G, 25 SV, 392.1 IP, 528 SO, 1.20 WHIP

Abreu's career stats are strong, but we saw a decline in 2026. The 29-year-old, like many players, had a down season; that doesn't necessarily mean it's all downhill from here, but it's definitely something to consider.

That being said, Abreu has been with the Astros for some big moments. He played a role in the 2022 World Series and dominated in 2023. He's been a key member of the organization, but a declining season could be his last with the Astros as they look to strengthen the bullpen.

If Abreu is gone, how does that shift the Astros' offseason priorities?

The staff needs help, and losing Abreu won't fix anything. Either a younger player needs to be brought up, or the hunt for a reliever needs to begin.

With all of this in mind, we're left with two questions.

Who could step into Abreu's role if he leaves?

Is keeping him worth the cost?

Setting outside additions aside, here’s what the Astros have internally heading into 2027.

They really only have AJ Blubaugh and Miguel Ullola in their pocket. Blubaugh is the likely choice. Ullola proved he could handle the majors, but he’s young, and the Astros debuted him earlier than intended. He went from top prospect to early debut and didn’t fall apart. Beyond Abreu's future, Ullola will likely take on a larger role; it's now just a matter of whether he can handle the workload.

At the right price, Abreu is worth keeping.
