Cristian Javier makes his first start since April 8 in Sunday’s series finale at Globe Life Field. It is a massive moment for a pitcher who has been through a long road back, and the Astros need him to deliver.
Javier’s Road Back
Javier has been out since April with a Grade 2 right shoulder strain. He was activated off the IL July 3 and has been working out of the bullpen since his return. After two relief appearances, he is now being given the ball to start for the first time since April.
The Astros rotation is thin and desperate for length. If Javier can give them five or six innings today it takes pressure off a bullpen that has been overworked. A successful start could mean a permanent spot back in the rotation heading into the second half.
The Opposition
MacKenzie Gore is 5-8 with a 4.72 ERA, per MLB. He stepped in for Jacob deGrom, who is dealing with a glute strain. On paper this is a beatable matchup for an Astros offense that has been clicking lately.
The Astros are 47-50 heading into the All-Star break. A series win today would be a great way to close out the first half. And Javier’s return to the rotation could be just as important as any trade deadline move.
