As Opening Day approaches, the Houston Astros are looking toward one of their brightest stars: Jose Altuve. The projected starting second baseman for the 2026 season is entering his 16th year in the majors.
José Altuve has been a star player since his Major League debut on July 20, 2011. The now 35-year-old has been the Astros' rock for years and is widely considered one of the best players in the franchise's history.
Despite being told he was too small to go pro, his determination and drive for baseball earned him a place in the major leagues. He learned to rely on speed, contact hitting, and diligence, and there is no doubt that Altuve possesses a burning passion and an exceptional work ethic.
Altuve has continued to thrive and prove his doubters wrong, especially during some of the Astros' greatest seasons from 2017 to 2022. During this time, the team commanded the league, making four appearances in the World Series and winning two championships.
Over the 2023–2025 seasons, Altuve combined for 63 home runs, 46 stolen bases, and maintained an OPS ranging from .771 to .915, showing he can still deliver at the plate, per MLB.
Altuve’s presence at the plate and in the field will be a key factor as the Astros look to start the season strong and compete for another postseason run. His consistency and experience set the tone for the roster, providing a foundation for both veteran and younger players to excel.
