As Opening Day approaches, players are getting back in shape and finding their rhythm on the field. Among the Astros, several seasoned veterans set the tone, guiding younger players through Spring Training. Here’s a look at some of the key veteran players and how they are shaping up as the team prepares for the 2026 season.

Lance McCullers Jr.

The 2026 season will mark his 12th year with the team, just behind Jose Altuve, who is entering his 16th season. Over his career, McCullers has compiled a 51-37 record with a 3.70 ERA, 861 strikeouts, and a 1.29 WHIP in 774 innings pitched, per MLB. He was part of Houston’s golden era, helping lead eight consecutive playoff appearances and playing a major role in the 2017 and 2022 World Series runs. His curveball and slider, combined with his ability to perform under pressure, have made him a trusted arm in big moments for over a decade. This spring, McCullers has been focused on fine-tuning his fastball command and working his off-speed pitches in camp.

Jose Altuve

At 35 years old, Jose Altuve remains one of the most accomplished and consistent players in baseball. A cornerstone of the Houston Astros for 15 seasons, Altuve has earned multiple All-Star selections, a league MVP award, and helped lead the team to two World Series titles. Known for his remarkable hitting ability, quick hands, and defensive prowess at second base, he continues to set the standard for excellence on and off the field. In Spring Training, Altuve has been taking extra reps at second base and refining his timing at the plate, showing that he is fully prepared to lead Houston’s lineup and make an immediate impact to start the 2026 season.

Yordan Alvarez

Yordan Alvarez is one of the best hitters in the league when healthy. Last season, the Cuban star played only 48 games due to injury, which seriously affected Houston’s offense. Offense was one of the team’s biggest struggles in 2025, and keeping Alvarez healthy will be key. This spring, Alvarez has been swinging the bat well in camp, taking live batting practice and preparing to stay healthy for the full season.

As Spring Training continues, these veteran players are setting the tone for the team, fine-tuning their skills and building momentum for Opening Day. Staying healthy and performing well in camp will be crucial as Houston looks to start the 2026 season strong, relying on their experience and leadership to guide the roster.
