Opening Day is quickly approaching, and Hunter Brown is getting close to the first Opening Day start of his career.

While there has been talk about Hunter Brown anchoring the staff, last month it was confirmed: he’ll be the Opening Day starter, marking the first such start of his career.

He has steadily developed into one of the Astros’ most promising young arms. This 6’2”, 27-year-old right-handed starter made his major league debut on September 5, 2022, and has grown into a reliable force in the rotation.

Brown had a breakout 2025 season. In 31 appearances, he went 12–9 with a 2.43 ERA, 206 strikeouts, and a 1.03 WHIP across 185.1 innings. He averaged just under six innings per start, posted 21 quality starts, and finished third in AL Cy Young voting, per MLB. His consistency, durability, and ability to handle a full workload make him a natural anchor in the rotation.

Brown is known for his power pitching approach. His fastball sits in the mid-90s and can reach 99 mph, while his slider is especially effective against right-handed hitters. He also mixes in a changeup and occasional curveball to keep hitters off balance.

During 2025, Yainer Díaz was often behind the plate, and the two developed a strong connection. Chemistry will be key as the Astros prepare for 2026.

With Opening Day less than two weeks away, Hunter Brown is locking in as he prepares to take the mound for the first time as the Astros’ Opening Day starter.
