Astros go for the series win today against the Tigers at Comerica Park. Hunter Brown gets the start in his own hometown of Detroit as he looks to secure the series.
Brown was born and raised in Detroit. He went to grade school, high school, and college all in his hometown. He played Division II baseball at Wayne State University, about two miles from Comerica Park.
He grew up a Tigers fan and modeled his delivery after former Tigers ace Justin Verlander. Brown even met Verlander as a fifth grader.
In four starts to open the season, Brown posted a 1.40 ERA with 28 strikeouts in 19 1/3 innings, per ESPN. He was placed on the IL April 5 with a right shoulder strain, eventually shifted to the 60-day IL. He made his return last Tuesday against the Tigers, his first start back in over two months.
Last season he finished third in AL Cy Young voting with a 12-9 record, 2.43 ERA, and 206 strikeouts, per MLB.
Jack Flaherty is expected to be activated off the IL to start for Detroit. A fitting opponent, given both pitchers are working their way back.
The Astros have already won two out of three games in this four game series. A win today would make it five straight series wins for Houston, a major comeback from how their season began.
The Astros have a real chance to close out a statement series in Detroit, especially with Brown on the mound. All eyes on Brown as he pitches in front of family and friends, for a series win.
