Jeremy Peña has been placed on the 10-day IL with a mild left calf strain, per MLB. Just when they got him back, he is out again, but he shouldn’t be gone long.
This is Peña’s second IL stint of the 2026 season, and the timing is not great for the Astros.
Peña reported left leg discomfort before Monday’s game against the Twins and sat out. After the loss, Espada clarified it is a mild left calf strain, not the hamstring.
Peña felt the issue for about a week before it got to a point where he had to say something. The Astros officially placed him on the IL June 30.
He was batting .295 with 6 HR, 21 RBI, and a .799 OPS in 48 games before going down, per MLB. Since returning from his hamstring injury in May, he had been even better, hitting .307.
He has been one of the most important players in this lineup when healthy.
He already missed over a month earlier in 2026 with a Grade 1 right hamstring strain. He also played through a broken finger suffered during spring training.
Allen was activated off the IL Monday after recovering from his own hamstring strain, just in time to step in for Peña again. He will start at shortstop in Peña’s absence. A solid defensive replacement but a significant bat to lose from the lineup. Allen is known to be weaker at the plate, but he has had some clutch at-bats this season.
The Astros are right in the thick of the AL West race, just two games back. Losing Peña at this point in the season is a blow they cannot afford for long. The All-Star break is two weeks away, so the timing could work in their favor if he heals quickly.
Peña has shown all season he can bounce back from adversity. Getting him back healthy for the second half push is the priority.
