2026 is looking eerily similar to 2025 for the Houston Astros. Injuries are piling up and testing their depth, and Carlos Correa is the most recent name added to the growing list.

Correa reportedly suffered an ankle injury during pregame batting practice before the victory against the Los Angeles Dodgers. After further review, he is expected to undergo surgery and will be out for the rest of the season, dealing a major blow to the team’s already thin infield depth and overall stability moving forward.

Correa is a versatile player and has been playing shortstop since Peña was injured, but now they are both on the injured list (IL).

Peña is expected to be back soon and is reportedly scheduled to start working out again May 8th, and should be back playing in mid-May. Until then, the shortstop duties fall to Nick Allen, an infielder the Astros acquired in a trade that sent fan favorite Mauricio Dubón to the Atlanta Braves.

Allen brings speed, athleticism, and elite defense, but when he steps up to the plate, his performance has been rocky.

2026 Regular Season AB: 25, R: 5, H: 6, HR: 0, RBI: 0, SB: 0, AVG: .240, OBP: .296, OPS: .576

Career Regular Season AB: 1095, R: 103, H: 234, HR: 9, RBI: 65, SB: 16, AVG: .214, OBP: .265, OPS: .537

Despite his struggles at the plate, Allen has shown elite defensive skills and should do just fine holding down the position until Peña returns later this month.
