Jeremy Peña was reinstated from the 10-day IL on July 10 and immediately inserted back into the leadoff spot. He missed just nine games with a mild left calf strain, and the Astros really couldn't afford for him to miss anymore after getting wiped out by injuries for the second straight consecutive season.
His return could not have come at a better time for a team trying to stay in the AL West race.
Peña has dealt with three separate injuries in 2026 alone. He played through a broken right ring finger suffered during spring training, then missed a month with a right hamstring strain, and then went down again June 28 with a left calf strain. Staying healthy has been the biggest challenge for him this year, and the most important thing for him to do. It is key for Peña to stay healthy. But Alvarez cannot carry the team all on his own.
Peña is batting .287 with 6 HR, 22 RBI, 35 runs scored, and 8 stolen bases in just 48 games, per MLB. He has a .773 OPS despite missing significant time. Peña was on it before the third injury took him out for nine games. He was batting .389 over his final four active games, and he was just three homers shy of his first career 20-20 season in 2025.
The 2022 World Series MVP brings a different energy to this lineup, and it's crucial he remains in it.
Peña came back and was immediately back in the leadoff spot. Braden Shewmake was designated for assignment in a corresponding move. Nick Allen filled in admirably, but Peña is a clear upgrade. His speed, defense, and ability to get on base at the top of the lineup changes the dynamic. And historically, a better bat than Allen, although Allen did have some strong and clutch at-bats.
The Astros are two games back in the AL West. Getting Peña back healthy heading into the second half is huge. Combined with Alvarez having an MVP season this lineup can be dangerous when everyone is clicking.
Peña has shown all season he can bounce back from adversity, and it is time for him to do it a third time so far this season. The Astros need him healthy and productive for the second half push if they want to remain competitive. When he is on the field, this team is a completely different unit. The unit they need to be.
