These prospects are competing for a spot as Major League camp begins. Who will earn a spot and some playing time?
Brice Matthews (Versatile Infielder): MLB No. 1 Prospect
Matthews, one of Houston’s top prospects and a Houston native, recently had his number retired by his alma mater. An elite athlete with speed, Matthews is an infielder with experience at multiple positions, including shortstop, second base, and third base. While his arm and swing are still developing, his versatility adds meaningful value, especially for an injury-prone roster.
A graduate of Atascocita High School in 2020, Matthews saw his No. 3 baseball jersey officially retired on January 30 in Humble, Texas.
Walker Janek (Catcher): MLB No. 3 Prospect
Walker Janek, a 23-year-old Texas native and catcher, has drawn attention and continues to be a top prospect to watch. Janek already shows the characteristics of an all-around backstop, although he is still developing as a player.
Janek has stayed relatively healthy throughout his pro career, with no major injuries slowing his climb.
Miguel Ullola (Right-Handed Pitcher): MLB No. 4 Prospect
Miguel Ullola, a right-handed pitcher, signed with the Astros in January 2021 and has steadily climbed through the minor league system. The Astros decided to protect him and officially add him to the 40-man roster.
He has shown he can handle Triple-A hitters at a young age. As the Astros look for rotation depth after the struggles of the 2025 season, Ullola, while no longer a minor league prospect, remains one of the youngest high-upside pitchers in camp. He could be the asset the Astros need. With further development and adjustments to facing more advanced hitters, he could be on the fast track to the majors and give Houston another reliable arm in the rotation.
Joseph Sullivan (Outfielder): MLB No. 5 Prospect
Joseph Sullivan, a 24-year-old outfielder, brings energy, plate discipline, and speed to the lineup and was a three-year starter at South Alabama, showing consistent on-base ability and athleticism in college. His combination of gap power and baserunning speed gives him upside both at the plate and in the field.
MLB.com lists Sullivan as one of the top prospects invited to big league camp, and he’s a player to watch as he continues his development in the Astros organization, per MLB.
