The Houston Astros have some work to do heading into 2027, but their defense might not need as much attention as other areas of the roster.

Houston committed 73 fielding errors during the 2026 regular season. While there is room for improvement, Christian Walker and Cam Smith being named Gold Glove finalists shows that the Astros have some strong defensive players to build around.

The Astros had to overcome adversity all season long. They had countless injuries and lost a major player for the majority of the season. Losing Carlos Correa was a big blow to the lineup. Adjustments had to be made, and support needed to come elsewhere. While errors may have been made, two players stood out on the field and helped keep this team alive.

Walker and Smith were two of Houston’s strongest defensive players this season. Walker committed just three errors in 154 games, while Smith ranked in the 91st percentile in range and the 80th percentile in arm strength.

That being said, both players struggled with consistency at the plate, and consistency at the plate from these two could be a game-changer.

A strong defense is crucial. With Walker in the trade discussion, the Gold Glove finalist announcement may play a role in the decision on how to solve their crowded infield situation. He may not be as strong at the plate, but if he can avoid a slump, he is definitely someone they should hold on to.

There is some tightening up they need in the defense, and they cannot rely on just the Gold Glove finalists to carry them. The Astros finished the season with 73 team fielding errors, and several of their infielders contributed to that number. Jeremy Peña had 13 errors, Isaac Paredes had nine, and Jose Altuve had six. Walker, however, committed just three errors in 154 games, earning a Gold Glove finalist nod.

With so many questions surrounding the Astros’ roster heading into 2027, keeping their defense strong is going to be important. Houston has some decisions to make this offseason, especially when it comes to the infield. Whatever changes they decide to make, they need to make sure they recognize their strengths and weaknesses.

As they prepare for the 2027 season, they have some work to do. When it comes to their defense, they need to tighten up a little bit. And their best defensive players need to lock in at the plate. Taking these elite players and making them well-rounded makes this team dangerous.
