The Houston Astros ace and starting catcher have built a solid relationship, and continuing to build on it could be key in 2027.

The Houston Astros' season has officially ended. It was an up-and-down season for this Houston team, which had to overcome adversity all year long. They fought hard and made it to the playoffs, but after a short playoff run, they head into the offseason.

The Astros head into the offseason with some questions to answer. Will Joe Espada be back in 2027? Will Jeremy Peña become a lifetime Astro? What will they do to improve their pitching staff?

But before looking at what they can do to beef up their staff, let's look at what they already have.

Injuries have put the Astros down in the past, and 2026 was no different. Ace Hunter Brown missed time early in the season due to a right shoulder strain, and the Astros took a hit. Brown and Yainer Diaz have a strong relationship, but the Astros were missing that early in the season.

During a press conference, Diaz was asked about his relationship with Brown, and his response suggests it's strong. With all the issues the Astros faced with their pitching staff this season, Brown was one of their most reliable arms, despite missing time on the IL. It was a shame that his season ended with such a disappointing performance, but overall, he remains one of their strongest arms; if not their strongest, he is their ace after all.

Let’s take a look at their starting catcher and their ace over the last two years. These two have worked together extensively, and Brown has put up solid numbers while Diaz is behind the plate. Brown has a 38-30 record with a 3.55 ERA. He has 616 strikeouts in 103 appearances with Yainer Diaz so far in his career. That strong relationship was built in 103 appearances together, and if they continue to build on that during the offseason heading into the 2027 season, these two will be a strong team.

Hunter Brown may have ended his 2026 season on a rough outing, but it doesn't take away from what he did and what he'll do for the Astros. In 2026, Brown went 6-4, finished with a 3.19 ERA, and recorded 124 strikeouts over 20 starts.

Diaz also had a strong year at the plate and behind it. Diaz ended the regular season with a .285 average, 98 hits, and 14 home runs.

Individually, they both had a good season, but what they have built and continue to build together could be the real difference-maker for this team.
