Isaac Paredes has been surrounded by trade rumors for months, but nothing has materialized. The Astros’ infield logjam remains unresolved, and trading Paredes has long seemed like the obvious solution.

With the infield crowded and trade talks stalled, Paredes may have a longer stay in Houston than expected.

Peña’s injury, while unfortunate, could open a temporary path for Paredes to contribute.

Jeremy Peña suffered a finger injury while representing the Dominican Republic earlier this week in preparation for the World Baseball Classic. He suffered the injury when a ball hit his fingernail during an exhibition game, causing him to leave after three innings.

There is no doubt that Paredes is a serious contributor, having posted strong numbers last season and proving himself a versatile, high-OBP player who can handle multiple positions. This injury opens a potential role for Paredes at third base if Peña cannot start, with Carlos Correa expected to shift from third to shortstop. If Correa is also unavailable, the Astros could put Nick Allen or prospect Brice Matthews in the lineup.

With Walker, Altuve, Peña, Correa, and Alvarez unlikely to play all 162 games, Paredes’ presence provides insurance against injuries and roster fatigue.

Trading him now could still make sense if the right offer appears, but patience may be the better path. By holding onto Paredes, the Astros maintain depth and flexibility, which could pay dividends later in the season when trade markets shift and injury needs become more urgent.
