The 2026 Houston Astros season has been defined by injuries, pitching struggles and inconsistency. But through all of it one thing has remained constant: Yordan Alvarez.
While the roster around him has been picked apart by the injury bug Alvarez has been nothing short of extraordinary. Through 41 games he is hitting .314 with 13 home runs and 29 RBIs. His 13 home runs rank among the top in the American League and his 1.044 OPS puts him in elite company, per MLB. Those are not just good numbers, those are MVP caliber numbers on a team that has been treading water all season.
Alvarez leads the team in virtually every offensive category and has been the engine keeping Houston's offense from completely falling apart. When the pitching has struggled and the lineup has been shorthanded Alvarez has shown up night after night and given the Astros a chance to win.
What makes him so dangerous is the combination of patience and power. He does not chase pitches out of the zone but when he gets one to hit he rarely misses. Opposing pitchers have no good options when he steps to the plate and that is exactly what makes him one of the most feared hitters in baseball.
For a team sitting at 16-26 and searching for reasons for optimism Alvarez is the clearest one. The Astros need everything to come together if they want to make a run this season but as long as Alvarez is in the lineup they always have a chance.
