The Houston Astros definitely have some questions that need to be answered this offseason, including who will be their next manager after parting ways with manager Joe Espada. While there are some question marks, it does appear that this team does have some solid young talent.

Speaking of the young talent, Bleacher Report MLB analyst Joel Reutter named every MLB team's best player under 25, and for the Astros, he went with right fielder Cam Smith.

Currently, Smith is 23 years old and had a pretty solid second season in the Majors, as in 2026, he played in 157 games and started 139 of those, showing his ability to be relied upon.

In terms of the stats, Smith recorded 510 at-bats, and in those at-bats he tallied 107 hits, 67 runs, 21 home runs, 56 RBIs, 44 extra-base hits (XBH), an OPS+ (on-base plus slugging) of 87, a WAR (wins above replacement) of 1.0, a batting average of .210, an  OBP (on-base percentage) of .279, an SLG (slugging percentage) of .390, and an OPS (on base percentage + slugging percentage) of .669.

So, when looking at Smith's statistical performance, it looks pretty solid, especially when considering that the 2026 season was just his second in the Majors.

Reutter noted that Smith made two key improvements as his home runs and strikeout percentage were each much better.

In 2025, Smith hit nine home runs and had a strikeout percentage of 27.8 percent, while in 2026 he hit 21 home runs and had a strikeout percentage of 26.1 percent.

Also, looking at Smith's postseason stats, he was able to make some solid contributions for the Astros in his first postseason appearance.

In the AL Wild Card series against the Chicago White Sox, Smith played in both games and had seven at-bats. In those seven at-bats, Smith totaled two hits, one run, one RBI, one home run, a batting average of .286, an SLG of .714, an OBP of .375, and an OPS of 1.089.

Obviously a two game sample size is very minimal, but nonetheless, his ability to perform at a very solid level is a great sign and may suggest that he could be someone this team can rely on next season as well as the postseason if the Astros can get there.

With all that said, Smith has a very promising 2026 campaign, and if he can build on his performance in the regular season as well as the postseason he could not only be one of the better young players the Astros have, but he could potentially one of the better and more consistent players on this Houston roster heading into 2027.
