The Houston Astros have gotten a great update on shortstop Carlos Correa in the latest injury report.
The Houston Astros are coming off a 6-3 win against the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday night, with the Astros now leading the series 2-0.
Heading into the third game of the series, the White Sox must find a way to respond. Otherwise, the Astros will take the series and extend Chicago's losing streak to as many as four games.
While adjustments will be key in this series, the injuries now and leading into the playoffs are just as important to monitor. So, let's take a look at the Astros' injury report heading into the third game of the series tonight.
To start, shortstop Carlos Correa has been recovering from the surgery he had on his torn peroneus brevis tendon in his left ankle. Correa was injured on May 5th and then had surgery on May 11th. As a result of this injury, Correa was placed on the IL on May 6th and then was moved to the 60-day IL on June 2nd.
Correa has been doing his best to progress ever since, and as a result, it seems there is a great sign when it comes to Correa's recovery. In the latest update from manager Joe Espada, he said that Correa will have a four-month checkup with the doctor on September 1st, with the hope that Correa can begin running the bases as well as sliding.
With this news, it seems that Correa could be more than likely to return at some point this season, which could be huge for the Astros with the playoffs approaching very quickly.
The second player to talk about on this injury report is right-handed pitcher Mike Burrows, who is recovering from right elbow neuritis. Due to this injury, Burrows was placed on the 15-day IL on July 13th, which is retroactive to July 7th.
In terms of recovery, Burrows has been progressing well and has actually made three rehab starts with Triple-A Sugar Land. In those three starts, Burrows has pitched 13 1/3 innings and allowed 11 hits, three runs, walked five batters, and struck out 15 batters.
Based on Burrows' performances with Sugar Land, it is possible that the Astros will call him up today, September 1st to rejoin the rotation. If Houston does call Burrows back up to the Majors he could provide some much needed depth in the bullpen.
Next up is outfielder Brice Matthews, who is still battling through a left knee sprain. Because of the left knee sprain, Matthews was placed on the IL on July 17th and was moved to the 60-day IL on August 19th. With Matthews now on the 60-day IL, his return is yet to be determined, which does suggest a setback, considering he was at one point expected back in the third week of August.
While there is a setback, Matthews has been doing his best to get back to action, as he has been hitting, fielding ground balls, and running, with the next step being to get him on the bases and see how he is able to handle that.
As Matthews continues to rehab, it will be interesting to see what the next update says and if he has the possibility of returning for the postseason.
The final player on the injury report is left-handed pitcher Brandon Walter who tore his ulnar collateral ligament on his left elbow. As a result of the injury, Walter was forced to get Tommy John surgery which he did on September 23rd, 2025.
Because Walter did get Tommy John surgery, he will miss the rest of this season, but as long as he recovers well he should be able to return next season and serve as valuable depth for the Astros pitching staff.
With these injury updates it seems that Correa and Burrows are very close to returning to provide depth for the Astros while on the other hand, Matthews is more uncertain but could return this season as well if he continues to progress well.
Looking ahead to 2027, Walter could serve as solid depth on the mound if he is able to return which could help the Astros perform much better and more consistently than they have so far this season.
