Taking a look at the Houston Astros injury report ahead of the series finale against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The Houston Astros are coming off a tough loss by a score of 4-3 on Saturday night against the Arizona Diamondbacks, which now has the series tied at 1-1 heading into Sunday afternoon's series finale.
Following this game, the Astros are still in a solid position to win the AL West as they have a three game lead over the Texas Rangers for the top spot in the division.
With Houston looking to clinch the division and make the playoffs, it will be key for this team to stay healthy as well as get a few players back who are still working through injuries.
So, let's take a look at the Astros' injury report heading into the series finale as Houston looks to finish off the series strong against the Diamondbacks.
On this injury report, the players to monitor include shortstop Carlos Correa, right-handed pitcher Mike Burrows, outfielder Brice Matthews, left-handed pitcher Steven Okert, and left-handed pitcher Brandon Walter.
The first player to talk about on this injury report is Correa who is still healing from the surgery he had done to repair his torn peroneus brevis tendon in his left ankle. Correa was injured on May 5th and got surgery on May 11th which then placed him on the IL on May 6th and after that he was moved to the 60-day IL on June 2nd.
At this point, it is possible that Correa returns at some point this season. In terms of Correa's recovery, he reported to the Astros' spring training facility in West Palm Beach, Florida, and, per the update on September 5th, he was able to field ground balls and hit in the cages.
Additionally, Correa will hit on the field on September 7th, which could be another great step in his progression and may enable him to return before the postseason.
The next player up is Burrows who has been dealing with right elbow neuritis and is also now working through right shoulder inflammation after his latest start with Triple-A Sugar Land. Due to the right elbow neuritis, Burrows was placed on the 15-day IL on July 13th which is retroactive to July 7th.
Currently, Burrows' return is still to be determined, so it will be interesting to see if he is able to return to play in the postseason for Houston. For Burrows' recovery, he will also be reporting to the Astros' spring training facility in West Palm Beach, Florida, and that should happen in the coming days, per the update given on September 5th. With that in mind, it will be intriguing to watch how Burrows progresses and if he can provide solid depth at the mound.
Next is Matthews, who is still recovering from a left knee sprain. As a result of the injury, Matthews was placed on the IL on July 17th and after that, he was transferred to the 60-day IL on August 19th.
Based on Matthews' current status, his return his still to be determined so there is no telling as to whether or not he will be back for the postseason. According to the latest update on September 5th Matthews reported to the spring training facility in West Palm Beach Florida as well and will begin running the bases before playing in games to see how his knee reacts and hopefully give a better idea of his timetable.
The fourth player on this injury report is Okert who is dealing with a right hamstring strain that occurred earlier this week. Due to the injury, Okert was placed on the 15-day IL on September 4th which is retroactive to September 1st.
Currently, Okert is expected to return on September 15th, which is a good sign, especially because of how difficult hamstring injuries can be to manage. Part of the reason Okert was placed on the IL on September 4th was due to him not pitching in the White Sox series. So, over the next two weeks, Okert's right hamstring strain will definitely be something to watch.
The last player to look at on this injury report is Walter, who will be out for the rest of the season as he is still recovering from the Tommy John surgery he had on September 23rd, 2025, to repair his torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow.
While Walter will miss the rest of this season, he should be able to provide some solid depth for the Astros from the mound in 2027.
So, as the Astros look ahead to the rest of the season, none of these players will return immediately, but it will be interesting to see if they can get Correa, Burrows, Matthews, and Okert for the postseason to contribute and looking forward to 2027 it will be intriguing to see how much of an impact Walter can make for Houston's pitching staff.
