Taking a look at how much the playoff appearance really meant for the Houston Astros.
During the 2026 season, the Houston Astros were very inconsistent and at times really struggled, which did end up leading to being swept by the Chicago White Sox in the AL Wild Card round of the playoffs.
With that said, there are definitely some questions that need to be answered heading into 2027 so this could be a very interesting offseason.
Following the conclusion of the Wild Card round for the American League and the National League, ESPN raised some offseason questions for each eliminated team, and the Astros have plenty of questions to answer.
Obviously, one of the biggest storylines will be for Houston to find a general manager for the 2027 season, as well as determine what the future for manager Joe Espada is, but there is one question that really stood out from ESPN. How much weight should the Astros put on this playoff appearance?
I really think this is a question worth asking, as this was a very interesting year for the Astros across the board, as there were some good moments, but overall, this team was very inconsistent.
At the end of the regular season, this team finished with an 81-81 record, meaning they were .500, but even with being an average team based on the record, the Astros were still able to win the AL West over the Texas Rangers.
On that note, ESPN brought up another point, which was that the Astros were outscored by 32 runs this season, and if they were in any other division, they would not have won their division, but they also would have missed the playoffs. So, when considering that, it is really worth wondering how much Houston can really take from this season.
Now, ESPN did also note that at one point the Astros were 20-31 and had some serious ground to make up to get back into the division race and they were, but once they caught up, they began to play very inconsistently which is not ideal, especially with the expectations that Houston has on a yearly basis.
Based on the result of this year, it seems that the Astros are an average team and at times even below average especially when it comes to the pitching as it was a major struggle throughout the 2026 season.
From the plate, the Astros were solid overall, but designated hitter Yordan Alvarez shined as he was chasing the Crown, and while he did fall short, he did clinch the batting average title as he finished with a .316. However, aside from Alvarez, the Astros were not able to get consistency at the plate, with players like second baseman Jose Altuve being up and down throughout the year.
When looking at the 2026 season for the Astros as a whole, it could be viewed as a success in the sense that Houston did win the division and Alvarez did clinch the batting average title, however, it does appear that there is a ceiling on this team and if the pitching as well as the consistency at the plate do not improve, this team may be in jeopardy of missing the playoffs next season or just simply being a Wild Card exit once again.
So, heading into the 2027 season, it will be interesting to see who the new general manager is and if Espada comes back as the manager, but ultimately the success will come down to whether or not this team can pitch better and hit more consistently, because if they cannot, it is very possible that the Astros will be stuck with a ceiling very similar to this year, which is not great for a team that aims to have high-level postseason success.
