The Astros Cam Smith Has a Real Gold Glove Case Heading Into Sunday
Oct 29, 2026 4:00 PM

Despite moving to a new position, the Astros standout leads AL finalists in putouts and range metrics, posing a serious threat to the established defensive elite.

Cam Smith had never played right field before reaching the majors. Now he’s a Gold Glove finalist there for the second straight season, and the Houston Astros should love where this is headed. Rawlings announces the winners Sunday night on ESPN. Smith probably isn’t the favorite, but his case is better than people think.

How the Vote Works

Managers and coaches make up 75-percent of the vote. The SABR Defensive Index, a blend of advanced defensive metrics, counts for the other 25-percent.In the index’s last public update on Aug. 9, Smith ranked second among AL right fielders, behind Boston’s Wilyer Abreu and ahead of Toronto’s Nathan Lukes.

Nobody Covered More Ground

This is where Smith shines. He finished with 7 outs above average, good for the 91st percentile and fourth among all MLB right fielders. Abreu and Lukes finished at 2 apiece. In plain terms, Smith made more tough plays than an average right fielder would and more than either of the other finalists. He also led AL right fielders with 294 putouts and his 157 games in the outfield were the most of any AL player. That’s a big jump from 1 out above average in 2025, and Sydney broke down that growth in his second season.

The Case for Abreu

To be fair, Abreu is the one to beat. His 28 defensive runs saved led all of baseball by a wide margin, his 13 outfield assists ranked second in MLB, and he’s already won this award twice. Lukes has a real case too. Statcast rated his arm the most valuable among AL outfielders, and he picked up at least 10 outfield assists.

The Arm Holds Him Back

Smith’s arm strength ranked in the 80th percentile, but his arm value landed in the 5th. The arm is there. The throws just haven’t added value yet Runs saved isn’t kind to him either. Smith had 5 in the outfield after posting 12 in 2025. Statcast says he got better, and runs saved says he slipped.

My Take

Abreu probably wins Sunday, and honestly, he’s earned it. Still, Smith has the best range of the three finalists, and range shows up on more balls than any throw ever will. He was also out there almost every day. If the managers value range and durability, an upset isn’t crazy.

What It Means for 2027

Smith is 23 and hit .210 with 21 homers this season. The glove is ahead of the bat, which buys him time in right field while the offense catches up. Clean up the throws, and Houston might not wait long for that first Gold Glove. Sunday is the next test.
