The A's will lose two key contributors to the operating table Tuesday morning, but received encouraging updates on Jeffrey Springs and Ryan Lasko's recovery.
While both Shea Langeliers and Mark Leiter Jr. are set to undergo surgery in Los Angeles on Tuesday morning, likely ending each of their seasons, the Athletics did receive some positive news on the injury front on Monday as well.
Jeffrey Springs, who left his start in the second inning on Sunday, is expecting to make his next start. He was removed on Sunday due to right hip discomfort.
"We got some imaging this morning on Jeff," A's manager Mark Kotsay said before Monday's game. "Everything came back clean." He mentioned that the discomfort impacted his ability to finish the game yesterday, but he MRI showed nothing structurally or muscularly that was cause for concern.
Springs is 3-10 on the year and holds a 6.23 ERA across 21 starts.
Langeliers and Leiter Updates
Langeliers was placed on the IL on Sunday with a meniscus tear in his right knee and went to see Dr. Banffy in Los Angeles on Monday, who recommended surgery. Langeliers will be undergoing that surgery on Tuesday morning.
Leiter, on the IL since July 21 with a right hip impingement, also saw Dr. Banffy in Los Angeles on Monday. Dr. Banffy also recommended that Leiter undergo surgery to address femoral acetabular impingement. That surgery is scheduled for Tuesday morning as well.
"Another tough break, really," Kotsay said. "Shea's been a catalyst for the club this year. He's one guy that you felt was gonna be able to stay in that lineup the rest of the season and continue to help us win games. Now it's a next-man up mentality."
Jonah Heim will be carrying a lot of the responsibility behind the dish "right now." Kotsay also mentioned that the surgery will take out Langeliers for the rest of the season.
Scheduled Off-Day For Nick Kurtz
The A's activated Nick Kurtz from the IL on Saturday, and after two games he is not in the lineup against the Red Sox.
Mark Kotsay said that this is a scheduled day off for Kurtz, who did not go out on a rehab assignment so that they could get him back in the lineup quickly.
"This is a play progression that is taking place like it would if he was on a rehab assignment," Kotsay said.
Kurtz went 1-for-7 with a three-run home run and five strikeouts in his two games back in Minnesota.
Ryan Lasko Regaining "Tingling Sensation"
At the end of June, A's outfield prospect Ryan Lasko collided with a teammate in the outfield as both players dove for the same ball. The following day, Lasko underwent spinal decompression and stabilization surgery resulting from a C6–C7 vertebra fracture. This left him without feeling in his lower half.
On Monday, Lasko posted the following message to his Instagram:
"Just wanted to give a quick update! I'm currently feeling much better. I have sensation from my feet up to my knees, along with a lot of involuntary leg movements. I also have been getting some sensation in the side of my thighs, hamstrings, and back. I currently have about 75% usage of my left hand and about 50% in my right. I'm very happy with my progress and once again, so thankful for all the love and support. It has continued to help me get up everyday and work my hardest."
The A's have been wearing "22 Strong" t-shirts up and down the organizational ladder to show their support for Lasko, and many of the A's players have also reached out to him.
The A's begin a four-game series with the Boston Red Sox on Monday night, with Jack Perkins (2-5, 6.75 ERA) looking to make the most of his opportunity in the rotation against a hot Sox squad.
