Two of the A's top prospects are dealing with injuries. The team provided updates on both Leo De Vries and Jamie Arnold on Wednesday.
On Tuesday night, A's top pitching prospect Jamie Arnold was hit in the face by a comebacker in the top of the first inning. His sweeper came off the hitter's bat at just over 107 miles per hour, hitting Arnold. He stayed on his feet, but immediately walked to the Las Vegas dugout, exiting the game.
The Athletics provided an update on Wednesday morning:
Jamie Arnold suffered intra-orbital and maxillary sinus fractures. Dr. Brendan G. Johnson, a dual board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon, determined that no surgery is required. There is no timetable for return.
Arnold was selected by the Athletics with the No. 11 overall pick in the 2025 MLB Draft. The A's didn't have him pitch again after the draft, which is fairly common given the timing of the draft and the ramp-up period it would take to get a pitcher up to speed before the end of the season.
That made 2026 his debut in pro ball, and he was placed in Double-A Midland as part of an aggressive assignment for him. After soaring through his first month with a 2.95 ERA in five starts, his next five starts in May produced a 7.11 ERA while batters hit .357 against him. In three of his five starts he gave up at least five earned runs.
From May onward, Arnold has been more steady, posting ERAs of 2.31 in June, 3.54 in July, and a 1.57 in August that ultimately helped him earn his promotion to Triple-A Las Vegas.
The lefty made his Triple-A debut last week, tossing five shutout innings while allowing four hits and two walks, striking out five.
Arnold has thrown 118 1/3 innings this season with a cumulative 3.50 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP.
Leo De Vries Team Statement
It was reported this week that No. 2 prospect in MLB, Leo De Vries would need surgery on his right shoulder after dealing with the injury for much of the season since sliding into a base earlier in the year.
The A's also released a statement on his surgery date, though they did not mention a potential recovery timetable. That will likely come in the post-surgery update, though the initial report said it would be as long as eight months.
A's statement:
Leo De Vries will undergo surgery to repair right shoulder instability on Sept. 14. Dr. Keith Meister will perform the surgery at the Texas Metroplex Institute for Sports Medicine in Arlington, Texas. More information will be available following surgery.
