The A's have acquired right-hander Hayden Juenger from the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for minor league catcher Owen Carapellotti. To make room on the 40-man roster, the team designated Brett Harris for assignment. 

Juenger, 25, was designated for assignment by the Jays on June 23. He made his MLB debut with Toronto this season on May 31, giving up three runs in one inning in Baltimore. He bounced back nicely in his second outing, firing a scoreless inning on 11 pitches on June 3 before being optioned. 

The righty relied on a mix of his four-seamer, slider and changeup in the big leagues. 

In the minors he had excelled, holding a 2.59 ERA (2.37 FIP) across 24 ⅓ innings with Triple-A Buffalo, striking out a solid 27.2% of batters. He also held a solid ground ball rate of 44.6%, which could help him have success in Sacramento if and when he gets the call.

Part of the reason for this acquisition — other than needing some new arms to add to the mix — is that Michael Kelly landed on the 7-day IL with Vegas on Saturday. 

Carapellotti, 23, is currently on the 7-day IL with the Stockton Ports and was signed by the A's as an undrafted free agent in 2025 out of Georgetown. He's hit .267 with a .389 OBP and eight home runs across 20 games this season. 

A's No. 4 prospect Wei-En Lin has been dealing with an injury for the past week, and with every update it appeared as though the dreaded surgery was going to be the end-game. Last week Athletics Roundtable reported that Lin had a shoulder strain and would be seeking a second opinion. 

That second opinion is that he needs Tommy John surgery, according to MLB.com, which typically has a 12-18 month recovery window. Given where we are in the season and the complications that could arise for the scheduling of the 2027 campaign due to expected labor strife, it may be 2028 until we end up seeing Lin on a baseball diamond. 

Lin, still just 20 years old, made 10 starts in Double-A to begin the season and went 3-1 with a 1.93 ERA across 51 ⅓ innings. He held a 26.6% strikeout rate and a 6.5% walk rate with the Midland RockHounds. 

This led to a promotion to Triple-A Las Vegas, and in two starts he was hit around to a 43.20 ERA across 1 ⅔ innings, walking four and striking out just one. There was work to be done, but he was one step away from the big leagues at just 20. Now he'll have a grueling rehab process to complete before making that MLB debut.
