Leo De Vries has been placed on the Double-A IL and was recently in San Jose, California, away from any A's affiliates. Athletics Roundtable asked the team about that trip.
Earlier this week, the Athletics Double-A affiliate, the Midland RockHounds of the Texas League, placed top prospect Leo De Vries on the 7-day IL. The shortstop prospect has been dealing with injuries throughout the season and has missed time sporadically.
His most persistent injury has stemmed from when he jammed his fingers into the base while sliding in early in the campaign. He has caused fans on social media to believe that he's getting called up whenever he has been missing from a lineup or scratched from one.
Instead, it was purely injury-related.
To that point, he posted on his Instagram account that he was in San Jose, California on Monday, but the A's don't have an affiliate there. Athletics Roundtable reached out to a representative of the A's for some clarification on the injury he's dealing with, and whether that trip to San Jose was actually one to Stanford to visit their specialists.
The representative said that they would have more information on his health status in the near future.
For now, that is what we know for certain.
After an incredibly strong 21-game stretch to close out Midland's regular season last year, there was some hope that De Vries would be pushing for a spot in the big leagues this season. He ended up batting .281 with a .359 OBP and five home runs with 16 RBI in those 21 games.
Of course, that was a lot of expectation to heap onto a 19-year-old.
He has been good this season, especially for someone his age, holding his own, but he hasn't reached those same heights. On the year, De Vries is hitting .290 with a .378 OBP — both outstanding given his age — but he has only slugged 13 home runs in 93 games.
After we reported that the A's were looking for more pop in his swing back on July 2, he had the two months with his highest slugging percentages of the season, posting a .527 in July and a .541 in August. His previous high had been .488 in June.
That overall dip in power production earlier in the year coupled with the lingering injuries the past couple of months has made it difficult for the A's to justify promoting him to Triple-A Las Vegas, because once they bring him up, they don't want to send him back down.
There has been plenty of excitement bubbling around De Vries since the A's acquired him in the Mason Miller/JP Sears trade in 2025. Given the late stage of the season, his landing on the IL after playing through the injury all season, and an upcoming health update, that excitement may have to simmer until 2027.
