For the first time in 20 years, a National League manager has been honored with the NL Manager of the Year award in consecutive seasons. Milwaukee's Pat Murphy was chosen again, the first NL manager to go back-to-back since Atlanta's Bobby Cox in 2004-05.
Murphy, who will be 67 years old later this month, received 27 first-place votes. Cincinnati Reds manager Terry Francona was second and got two first-place votes, followed by Rob Thomson of the Philadelphia Phillies, who had one first-place vote.
Here's how the voting went, with five points for first, four for second and so on through five places:
Pat Murphy, Milwaukee Brewers — 141 points
Terry Francona, Cincinnati Reds — 49 points
Rob Thompson, Philadelphia Phillies — 32 points
Craig Counsell, Chicago Cubs — 24 points
Clayton McCullough, Miami Marlins — 22 points
Torey Lovullo, Arizona Diamondbacks — 1 point
Mike Shildt, San Diego Padres — 1 point
Murphy led the Brewers to a major-league-best 97-65 record, setting a franchise record for wins. The Brewers trailed their arch-rivals, the Chicago Cubs, in the NL Central race as late as iearly July but then had a 29-4 stretch to take the lead. They had a 14-game winning streak at one point, which was also a franchise record.
Milwaukee eliminated Chicago in the NLDS before being swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series. The 3-2 series victory over the rival Cubs was the Brewers' first postseason series win since 2018.
