The Toronto Blue Jays lost on Friday night 6-3 against the Arizona Diamondbacks, dropping to a very disappointing 7-12 on the campaign.
The only thing that can really comfort the Blue Jays is that other teams with big expectations (Boston Red Sox, 8-11, Seattle Mariners, 8-13, and New York Mets, 7-13) are also struggling.
Of course, it's still early, but it won't be early for long. The Blue Jays need to start playing better, but that's admittedly hard to do when the team is suffering a new injury issue at every turn.
Trey Yesavage, Jose Berrios, Shane Bieber and Yimi Garcia are yet to pitch this season, while offseason signing Cody Ponce just underwent surgery for a torn ACL that will cost him the rest of the year.
Addison Barger, George Springer and Alejandro Kirk were injured shortly after the season began and Anthony Santander could mis the entire season with a labrum injury. And on Friday? Daulton Varsho and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. both experienced discomfort, though luckily the team appears to have avoided disaster.
According to Keegan Matheson of MLB.com, Varsho injured his leg, from his quad to his knee. He took only one at-bat before leaving the game, but no MRI is scheduled at this time. Guerrero injured his left index finger, but says he's fine and it's expected that he'll be in the lineup.
The Jays sputtered across the board in this loss, as the offense scored just three runs on eight hits. They scored single runs in three separate innings and had just three extra-base hits. Defensively, they committed three errors and Eric Lauer suffered the loss, giving up three earned runs in five innings.
On the other side, Michael Soroka continued the excellent start to his season, going seven innings and giving up just two earned runs on five hits. He walked none and struck out five.
The two teams will play again on Saturday night with first pitch coming at 8:10 p.m. ET.
Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Max Scherzer (31) pitches to the Minnesota Twins during the second inning at Rogers Centre. John E. Sokolowski-Imagn ImagesFormer Diamondbacks pitcher Max Scherzer will take the mound for Toronto against Zac Gallen. Scherzer is 1-2 with a 9.58 ERA while Gallen is 1-1 with a 3.60 ERA. Scherzer needs just two strikeouts to become the next member of the 3,500 strikeout club.
When he hits that number, he'll be just the 11th pitcher ever to accomplish it.
The other 10? Nolan Ryan, Randy Johnson, Roger Clemens, Steve Carlton, Bert Blyleven, Tom Seaver, Don Sutton, Justin Verlander, Gaylor Perry and Walker Johnson.
