The shortstop, on the injured list since Sept. 9, is hitting, but he continues to not be able to run as he battles a knee injury.

Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette, on the injured list since Sept. 9 with a left knee sprain, continues to work back, but his playoff prognosis also continues to be murky.

    Per Keegan Matheson of Sportsnet.

Bo Bichette is hitting again today, but not running yet. The hitting is going well, but all that really matters for his timeline is how Bichette’s knee responds to running (and bouncing around the infield for ground balls). #BlueJays

    Bichette's impact

The 27-year-old pairs with Vladimir Guerrero Jr., George Springer and Alejandro Kirk to make up one of the deepest lineups in the American League, and together, they have goals of winning the first title for the Jays since 1993. Toronto has already clinched a playoff spot and is seeking its first American League East title since 2015. They have a two-game lead on the New York Yankees entering play on Tuesday.

Bichette has had an excellent season, hitting .311 with 18 home runs and 94 RBIs. He leads MLB in hits (181), even despite not playing since Sept. 7. He also has the most doubles in the league with 44.

    Impact on the roster

Toronto will be faced with multiple issues if Bichette is unable to play shortstop. For instance, if he is confined to designated hitter, what does that mean for Anthony Santander, who is working his way back from his own injury and is not known as a great outfielder?

    Bichette's future

While the injury isn't likely to hurt his long-term earning potential, Bichette is a free agent at the end of the year. A stellar end of season and playoff run could certainly boost his financial value in the offseason, but if he's hampered or unable to play, he won't get that boost.

    Up next

The Blue Jays are 90-66 and will start a new series with the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday night at Rogers Centre. First pitch is set for 7:07 p.m. ET as Kevin Gausman (TOR) pitches against Lucas Giolito (SOX).
