Otto Lopez and Xavier Edwards could potentially both be available.
According to a recent report from the Miami Herald, the Miami Marlins are not actively seeking to trade either of Xavier Edwards or Otto Lopez, but they could potentially be willing to trade one or both this offseason.
And with the Toronto Blue Jays unwilling to commit to Ernie Clement as the team's everyday second baseman in 2027, that leads to the question of whether or not the Jays should make a move for either one of them.
About Xavier Edwards
A first-round pick of the San Diego Padres in 2018, Edwards made his debut with the Marlins in 2023. Now, he's a four-year veteran who has hit .291 for his career. In 2026, he hit .280 with a .360 on-base percentage. He hit just six home runs and drove in 52 runs, though he stole 21 bases. He's had 21 steals or more in each of the last three years.
He's under team control through 2029, meaning he has three years left. He played 138 games at second base last season and is a direct replacement for Clement's starting role if the team wants.
On the positive side? He plays second base and he provides this team with a stolen base threat it didn't have enough of in 2026. He's also a switch-hitter, which can help reduce matchup problems.
On the negative side? The Blue Jays finished last in the league in home runs in 2026. Do they really need to bring in another light-hitting player who is contact-oriented?
About Otto Lopez
Well, Lopez is a player that the Blue Jays know very well, considering he came up in their system.
The 28-year-old, who represented Canada at the 2026 World Baseball Classic, hit .305 with 11 home runs, 71 RBIs and 34 stolen bases. He posted a .349 on-base percentage and led the major leagues in hits with 191.
Miami Marlins shortstop Otto Lopez (6) hits a single against the Atlanta Braves during the first inning at loanDepot Park. Sam Navarro-Imagn ImagesHe made his major league debut with the Blue Jays in 2022, going 6-for-9 in eight games, but he didn't get a regular big league chance. He played only 84 Triple-A games in 2023, hitting .258 and he was designated for assignment and traded in 2024.
He was traded to the San Francisco Giants, where he went just 1-for-6 in Triple-A before being let go again. The Marlins picked him up and the rest is history. He hit .270 in 117 big league games in 2024, then hit .246 in 2025 before putting up the incredible year this season.
He's also under control through 2029. He would likely require a move to second base, or a move from Andres Gimenez back to second base.
Again, on the positive: He runs well and he offers a little more power, as he also had 15 homers in 2025. As a right-hander, he'd pair with Alejandro Kirk, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Kazuma Okamoto in the order, but he also lacks the true power this team needs.
Verdict
I would be interested in acquiring either player, but I don't think the Blue Jays really have the ability to meet the Marlins' asking price. Look, both Edwards and Lopez are better than Clement because of the base stealing element, but they really are the similar types of players. That said, I'm not going to go above and beyond to acquire players with the same profile - even if its better.
What this team needs is power at the position, which is why the likes of Brandon Lowe and Jazz Chisholm Jr. are better fits on the free agent market.
