Speaking this week on MLB Network, Insider Jon Morosi said that the Toronto Blue Jays are one of the teams that have checked with the Arizona Diamondbacks on the trade availability of All-Star infielder Ketel Marte. The Philadelphia Phillies are another.
Now, that was before the Jays went out and signed Dylan Cease to a seven-year deal worth $210 million on Wednesday, so it's unclear if they'd still have interest in Marte after doing that.
That said, we'll take a look at the feasibility:
Now 32 years old, Marte will play the entire 2026 season at 32. An 11-year veteran of the Seattle Mariners and Diamondbacks, he's a career .281 hitter with 171 home runs and 587 RBIs.
Marte has seven seasons of double-digit home run totals and two seasons of 30 or more. He's got two seasons of 90+ RBIs, is a three-time All-Star, a two-time Silver Slugger and an NLCS MVP.
He's signed through the 2030 campaign with just over $90 million remaining. There is also an $11.5 million player option for 2031. Given the price tags on premiere players, he's relatively affordable.
For that reason, the Diamondbacks don't have to trade him, either.
Yes.
The Blue Jays have an opening in the infield since Bo Bichette is currently a free agent. Ideally, Toronto would sign Bichette and play him or Andres Gimenez at second base and the other at short.
However, if they were to trade for Marte, they'd use him at second base and Gimenez at shortstop.
Given the money that the Jays just spent on Cease, perhaps they'd rather trade for a less- expensive Marte than dole out another big deal to Bichette.
Toronto has now spent $500 million on Vladimir Guerrero Jr., $210 million on Cease and approximately $100 million on Gimenez in the last calendar year.
Toronto's farm system is not particularly well-regarded, though it is improving. Most of the Jays top prospects are middle infielders at aged 20 or less, so it's unclear if the D'backs would actually want to play the long game in a trade of Marte.
Would the Jays be willing to trade a young piece off their major league roster in this deal? Perhaps Addison Barger? That feels like too much on Toronto's end, given that Barger turned into a star in the playoffs.
