At 21-27 through 48 games, there are plenty of questions about the present for the Toronto Blue Jays.

But just because we're focused on the present, that doesn't mean there aren't questions about the future as well.

One of those? Does Max Scherzer have a role on this team moving forward?

Scherzer went on the injured list following an April 24 start against the Cleveland Guardians because of ankle and forearm issues. He's now working back, having thrown a 22-pitch bullpen the other day.

He'll certainly need rehab assignments in order to get ready and then the Blue Jays will have to decide if there's going to be a spot for him in the starting rotation.

Scherzer has struggled mightily this season, going 1-3 with a 9.64 ERA. He's lasted only 18.2 innings across five starts and was knocked out in the third inning of two of his last three starts before getting injured.

Under normal circumstances, those kinds of numbers might be worthy of a DFA, but these are not normal circumstances.

Kevin Gausman and Dylan Cease are set in the rotation, as is Trey Yesavage. But beyond that, all bets are off. Patrick Corbin has been an admirable fill-in and the Jays have utilized openers as part of the plan for the last week or so.

Things can change in the next few weeks, but as of now, it seems like this team badly needs Scherzer to come back and retain the fifth starter spot - and they'll need him to produce.

Depth starter Bowden Francis is out for the year. Shane Bieber has yet to go on a rehab assignment from his own forearm issues and Jose Berrios, who could have taken that No. 5 spot, is having surgery on Wednesday to repair the stress fracture in his elbow that continues to give him problems.

There are no real answers down on the farm, either, at this point, so the team seems fairly dependent on Scherzer for now.

The Blue Jays and New York Yankees will play again on Wednesday night with first pitch coming at 7:05 p.m. ET. The Jays have lost each of the first two games of this series and will send Yesavage to the mound as they attempt to get back into it. He's 1-1 with a 1.40 ERA while Cam Schlittler is 6-1 with a 1.35 ERA for New York.

Armed with an upper-90s fastball, Schlittler looks like one of the best pitchers in the American League in just his first full season.
