Toronto Blue Jays second baseman Ernie Clement will start for the American League All-Star team on Tuesday night as the AL looks to topple the National League at Citzens Bank Park (8 p.m. ET).

The All-Star Game will have a distinctly Blue Jays flavor, as starting pitcher Dylan Cease will start on the mound and manager John Schneider will be leading the squad from the dugout. Reliever Louis Varland will likely pitch in relief as well.

The All-Star trip is special for each of those three players, as it's the first All-Star Game for the trio. Clement, who has finally found a home in Toronto, was the top vote-getter in the American League.

It's been an excellent season for Clement, who is hitting .296 with eight homers, 32 RBIs and a .318 on-base percentage. He's carrying an OPS+ of 102, and is also helping carry a Blue Jays lineup that has been hampered by injuries.

In addition to all the losses on the pitching front, Toronto has seen George Springer, Anthony Santander, Alejandro Kirk and Addison Barger on the injured list at various points. Santander has yet to play this season because of offseason surgery on his left labrum. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has also not turned in his usual production, as he has only six homers at the break.

Clement will hit ninth in Schneider's batting order.

The 30-year-old is a six-year veteran of Cleveland, the Oakland Athletics and Blue Jays. He's a career .268 hitter who set the major league record for most hits in a postseason last year (30) as the Blue Jays got to the World Series.

As noted by StatsCentre, Clement is just the fourth Blue Jays second baseman to start the All-Star Game, joining Marcus Semien, Aaron Hill and Roberto Alomar. Alomar did it four times in his career.

While many things have gone wrong for the Blue Jays in this 45-51 season, the organization did get something right: The selection of right-hander Spencer Miles in the Rule-5 Draft this past winter.

At the All-Star Break, Miles is 4-1 with a 2.85 ERA. He's appeared in 26 games, starting three, helping to keep the pitching staff together in the face of all the injuries. He's thrown 60 innings, striking out 57 batters and showing velocity in the mid-to-upper 90s. He looks like a player that the Jays will want to have in the organization for years to come.
