Ricky Romero is interested in seeing what Adam Macko will do in his first taste of major league action
The Toronto Blue Jays' injury troubles, particularly on the pitching side of things, don't seem to be going anywhere anytime soon.
As a result, the Blue Jays have made a series of roster moves throughout the course of the season to try and find a balance that works between its short-staffed starting rotation and tumultuous bullpen.
Toronto recently made a move in regards to trying to find that balance and recalled 25-year-old left-handed pitcher Adam Macko from the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons on Sunday. Macko's first appearance will mark his major league debut.
Macko was originally picked in the seventh round of the 2019 MLB Draft by the Seattle Mariners.
The Bratislava, Slovakia, native (who grew up in Canada) was plagued with injuries with the Mariners organization. He was limited to just 26 appearances (19 starts) from 2019-22.
Seattle traded Macko, along with right-handed pitcher Erik Swanson, to the Blue Jays on Nov. 16, 2022, in return for outfielder Teoscar Hernandez.
Macko has been generally healthier with Toronto than he was with the M's. He had 63 outings (54 starts) from 2023-25 across various Blue Jays minor league affiliates.
In his first major league spring training this year, Macko made two appearances out of the bullpen and didn't give up a run. He struck out two hitters, walked two and didn't allow a hit.
Macko also competed for Canada in the 2026 World Baseball Classic.
Macko, who's ranked as the No. 21 prospect in Toronto's organization (per MLB Pipeline) hasn't been able to have quite as much success this season in Triple-A as he had in spring training.
Macko has posted a 4.50 ERA this year and has fanned 19 hitters in 18 innings pitched across 13 appearances.
Despite his general struggles with the Bisons, a former Blue Jays pitcher is looking forward to seeing what Macko can do.
"I'm just looking forward to seeing what he can do," Ricky Romero said on the Blue Bird Territory podcast. " ... It can be an audition for him to be able to stick with the club if he comes out and does his job. This is a team that relies on their bullpen a lot. (Given) the way things have gone for them, you hope that him being built up, he's healthy enough to go out there. ... I think a lot of times he was attacking hitters (in spring training), putting them away. And he carried that into the (World Baseball Classic). So you just hope he carries that same magic into the Blue Jays bullpen."
Macko will have an opportunity to make a great impression in Toronto's upcoming series.
The Blue Jays will take on the New York Yankees in a four-game series, with game one beginning at 7:05 p.m. ET on Monday at Yankee Stadium in New York.
