The World Baseball Classic has several Toronto Blue Jays players who are still representing their respective countries into the single-game elimination rounds.
The quarterfinal round of the international tournament begins Friday and a former Blue Jays will be looking to end the current face of the franchise's chances at WBC glory.
Former Toronto pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu will get the start for Korea in a quarterfinal game against the Dominican Republic at 6:30 p.m. ET on Thursday at loanDepot Park in Miami.
Ryu will face the current Blue Jays superstar Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who currently plays for the Dominican Republic.
Ryu played 11 seasons in the major leagues from 2013-23. Four of those seasons were spent with Toronto from '20-23.
Ryu played seven seasons in the Korean Baseball Organization in Hanwha Eagles from '06-12 before he signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The 38-year-old spent seven seasons in Los Angeles before signing a four-year, $80 million contract with Toronto. After his contract with the Blue Jays ended, he returned to Korea and re-signed with the Eagles on an eight-year deal ahead of the 2024 season. He's pitched with Hanwha since.
Across his entire career stateside and in Korea, Ryu is a one-time KBO MVP ('06), one-time KBO Triple Crown winner ('06), seven-time KBO All-Star ('06-12), led the KBO in strikeouts five times ('06-07, '09-10, '12) and led the KBO in ERA twice ('06, 10).
While in the MLB, Ryu was a one-time All-Star ('19), one-time MLB ERA leader ('19) and was a two-time second-team All-MLB selection ('19-20).
While with Toronto, Ryu posted a 3.97 ERA and struck out 269 batters in 315 innings pitched across 60 starts.
Ryu has made one start in the WBC this season. He struck out three batters and allowed one earned run on three hits (one home run) in three innings pitched against Chinese-Taipei on March 7.
Korea advanced to the quarterfinal as the Pool C runners-up behind Japan. The Dominican Republic, who is still perfect in WBC play, won Pool D after beating Venezuela in the championship game.
Ryu will likely have several opportunities to strikeout his former teammate and defending American League Championship Series MVP, Guerrero.
Guerrero has slashed .500/.500/1.083 with a 1.583 OPS in three games and 12 at-bats for the Dominican Republic. He's hit a double and two home runs with seven RBIs.
The winner of the game between Korea and the Dominican Republic will face the winner of another quarterfinal game between Team USA and Canada in the semifinal round Sunday at 8 p.m. ET at loanDepot Park.
